Echo Audiology’s Approach to Tinnitus
Since tinnitus is often linked to ear or hearing‑related factors, the evaluation process typically begins with a comprehensive hearing assessment. This allows us to examine the auditory system and identify any potential sources contributing to the tinnitus.
Detailed intake questionnaires help us better understand your medical history, lifestyle factors, and how tinnitus affects you day to day. This information often guides us in identifying potential causes as well as appropriate management strategies, whether acoustic‑based or otherwise. When appropriate, we may also refer you to other health professionals who work with tinnitus. Our consultations also include in‑depth counselling to help you better understand and manage your symptoms.
Research & Tinnitus
Our Audiologists are committed to providing evidence‑based care, often referencing research sources or flow charts to outline potential causes and risk factors associated with tinnitus. We also keep up to date with emerging research, including recent advances in the intervention of pulsatile tinnitus newly available at The Ottawa Hospital, for appropriate cases.
We were pleased to see a recent article published in Canadian Audiologist by Dany Pineault, AuD, “Beyond Amplification: A Comprehensive, Evidence-Based Approach to Tinnitus Management” which explores tinnitus in greater detail. The article closely reflects Echo Audiology’s approach to tinnitus care and highlights many of the key considerations our Audiologists consider during patient consultations.

Does a Tinnitus Consultation at Echo Audiology Include a Medical Report?
Yes. This report outlines the findings from your assessment, your recommendations, and ensures that all relevant medical information is thoroughly documented for your healthcare needs.
Can Hearing Aids Help with Tinnitus Management?
Hearing aids can be an effective tool for managing tinnitus symptoms for many individuals. They work by amplifying external sounds to help distract from sound of the tinnitus. Some hearing aids also have built-in programs that can provide additional help for tinnitus patients. Our Audiologist team evaluates each patient’s auditory profile to determine if hearing aids are suitable to help with their tinnitus management.
Do You Automatically Recommend Hearing Aids for People with Tinnitus as Part of the Rehabilitation Plan?
We do not automatically recommend hearing aids for everyone with tinnitus. Our approach involves an in-depth consultation that includes a detailed case history discussion and an audiometric evaluation. Only when these assessments indicate that hearing aids could be beneficial do we consider them as part of a comprehensive tinnitus treatment plan. We may also explore other options if hearing aids are not suitable.
What Are the First Steps in a Tinnitus Consultation at Echo Audiology?
The first step in addressing tinnitus symptoms at Echo Audiology is a detailed consultation that includes collecting a comprehensive case history and conducting a complete auditory evaluation. This helps us to understand the potential causes of your tinnitus and possible rehabilitation options available that suits your specific needs.
